UNM Continuing Education & Community Services

History

Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico is the flagship university of New Mexico. UNM main campus now occupies 600 acres along Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a city of more than 700,000 people. UNM has branch campuses and distance education through Extended University that offers degrees and certificates to the citizens of New Mexico. UNM is a research institution with over 30,000 students with major schools of engineering, business, medicine and law.

Integral to the University, Continuing Education has served as the center for lifelong learning, providing innovative educational training and personal enrichment opportunities for students, businesses and community partners in New Mexico. For more than 80 years, as the premiere provider of continung education to the state, UNM Continuing Education has played a major role in community service and outreach for UNM, with a focus on economic and workforce development.

In January of 2013, UNM Provost Chaouki Abdallah announced the merger of Extended University and Continuing Education into a new division of Extended Learning. Extended University will continue to create access to academic credit classes and degree completion. Continuing Education will continue to offer non-credit classes for lifelong learning. The new Vice Provost of Extended Learning, Monica Orozco, will oversee both departments as together they create new educational innovations for all New Mexicans.
